The Department of Anthropology, University of California, Irvine, invites applications for an Assistant Professor (tenure-track) position starting July 1, 2008. We seek a candidate with strong theoretical and methodological training in linguistic anthropology who is committed to working at the theoretical forefront of the subdiscipline and anthropology more broadly, and to working in a top research-oriented Department. Research foci might include (but are not limited to): language ideologies, ethnography of communication, pragmatics (including metapragmatics), discourse analysis, semiotics, language in interaction, verbal art and aesthetics, narrative and textualities, literacy, and the relationship between language and social domains like gender, race, sexuality, ethnicity, class, and nation. Research should demonstrate a strong ethnographic component as well as facility with techniques of linguistic analysis, and could address a range of topics, including (but not limited to) language and politics, language planning, language acquisition, multilingualism, bureaucratic institutions, folklore, language socialization, ritual and performance, and the workings of speech communities. Geographic area is open. Evidence of research and teaching excellence is required.

The successful candidate will help form the core of an interdisciplinary program in the language sciences, and thus should demonstrate the ability to work with scholars conducting research in domains like theoretical linguistics, computational linguistics, psycholinguistics, and naturalistically informed philosophy of language. The Department of Anthropology at UC Irvine is a sociocultural program of seventeen faculty, fifty graduate students and 250 undergraduate majors that is committed to theoretical and methodological innovation.
