UCI
admitted its first cohort of Anthropology graduate students in 1994.
The program currently accepts about five or six students into its Ph.D.
program each year, with a approximately 30 students currently in residence.
UCI's Anthropology Department seeks graduate students interested in
a highly selective and intensive program that emphasizes current developments
in anthropological theory and innovative methodologies for the study
of contemporary issues. Successful applicants to our program have excelled
in their undergraduate studies and demonstrated creativity and initiative
in the pursuit of their scholarly goals.
Since the Department of Anthropology at UCI specializes in sociocultural
anthropology, successful applicants to the Ph.D. program must have selected
this field of the discipline for intensive study. Applicants should
have excelled in their undergraduate work and have demonstrated strong
intellectual capabilities and creativity in their undergraduate career.
Moreover, the Department expects applicants to have preliminary research
interests that are broadly consistent with those of our faculty. This
is especially important given the nature of anthropological fieldwork
(long-term field research, typically abroad). Accordingly the Department
gives primary consideration to applicants statements of purpose
and letters of recommendation.
See our People pages for further
information on our faculty and graduate students, and About
Us for details on anthropology at UCI.
